The Carbon Capture Alliance unites four global leaders, with over 110 years of project delivery expertise and proven carbon capture technology, ready to create a lasting, sustainable legacy in Teesside and the UK.
Ready to deliver
The Carbon Capture Alliance (CCA) is an alliance formed of Technip Energies, GE Vernova, and Balfour Beatty, supported by Shell in the UK. The alliance members are deeply committed to long-term investment in the UK, with members already possessing a significant UK footprint and a mature UK supply chain. Collectively, we employ more than 21,000 people across the country and bring experience of over 110 years of delivering transformative schemes in communities the length and breadth of the country. Embedded in the communities we work with, we prioritise using local employees and businesses, especially small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), to generate high-quality, well-paid jobs, build local resilience, and create as much economic opportunity as we can.
COMMITTED TO TEESSIDE
We welcome our selection for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the Onshore Power, Capture and Compression contract for Net Zero Teesside (NZT) Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) Projects. NZT Power aims to be one of the world’s first commercial scale gas-fired power stations with carbon capture. The selection of our alliance and technology marks an important next step towards the proposed development of bp’s NZT Power project in the UK, aiming to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 per year. We are committed to investing in the development of local skills and training, leveraging our existing collaborations with schools and universities on Teesside from other major infrastructure schemes we are delivering. Here’s what else NZT Power can deliver.*

The expertise that counts
NZT Power will continue the CCA members' track record of safe, effective project delivery. We unite four global companies who have safely executed thousands of pioneering projects, from early phase to delivery and beyond, including ground-breaking achievements with BP, and handover/commissioning of approximately 450 major projects in any given year. Here are just two of our recent projects.
What we can deliver for NZT Power
GE's equipment delivers more than 47% of the UK’s electricity and GE's most advanced gas turbine, the HA, has demonstrated over 1.7M operating hours of commercial experience across 78 units as of January 2023. Approximately 75% of UK gas fired power plants have already chosen GE gas turbines.
And when it comes to carbon capture and storage Shell CANSOLV® CO2 Capture System technology is proven at scale with the largest unit in operation since 2014 with a capacity of up to 1mtpa of CO2. In 2022, it has been selected as the chosen technology for eleven feasibility studies and developments, including three in the UK.
Levelling up in action
The CCA members rely on 21,000 employees across the UK and Ireland, combined, and NZT Power will build on our legacy of transformational employment and business opportunities. We currently have 41 live contracts within 50 miles of Teesside, and will target over 50% UK content during project execution, including community businesses and employees. In 2021, we generated £716.5m of social value in the UK and spent more than £1bn with UK SMEs and local businesses. Here are just two examples of the difference we can make.
HS2’s new station in North West London can become the UK’s best-connected rail station once completed. While it is currently under construction, as of March 2024 the project has supported 144 new and existing apprenticeships. Furthermore, it has provided 59 20-day work placements and over 345 new jobs for people in the local area, including 37 people who were not in paid employment.
Balfour Beatty’s joint venture delivering HS2 main civil engineering works has opened its latest Skills Academy. Working closely with the joint ventures first Academy which focuses on upskilling people who are out of work or looking for a new job, the new facility at Kingsbury offers over 1,000 courses to get the joint ventures workforce—which is expected to reach 7,000—trained, accredited and job-ready.
Delivered by combining the breadth of Balfour Beatty’s engineering capabilities, the new Littlebrook substation is an integral part of the UK electrical system, facilitating the flow of 2GW of renewable electricity to 1.5 million homes and businesses across the Southeast of England.
